What is the success rate of the programme?
Our treatment aims to help patients to achieve natural pregnancy for those who are unable to conceive and live birth for those who have recurring miscarriages.
Our latest statistical analysis of patients’ outcomes shows the programme has a success rate of 45%.
For patients who come with specific problems such as low AMH, high FSH, hormone imbalance, PCOS, endometriosis etc., over 80% will see significant improvements after 3 months. Patients then explore options after that.

What conditions can we treat?
Since our inception in March 2000, we have had experience of helping women with conception issues, recurring miscarriages, unexplained infertility, perimenopause, PCOS, endometriosis, Early menopause and irregular and/or painful periods due to hormonal imbalances, to name but a few.
Increasing AMH and Reducing FSH
If you go to your GP or gynaecologist, the chances are that they may tell you PCOS is not treatable. Alternatively, they may offer medication to induce ovulation which tends to leave the underlying causes unattended.
We have treated many patients who have PCOS. Patients are either treated by us or they combine our treatment with IVF treatment. Below are some testimonials from patients with PCOS.
Emma was 32 when she first came to us. She has PCOS and had one failed IVF with poor egg quality before. She started treatment with us and was with us on and off for over a year. Since her husband has a very busy job and is not often in the country, we suggest that she should work with an IVF Clinic we work with. During her first cycle, she started breeding early on, as a result, no embryo was developed or transferred. She then repeated the IVF procedure and is now pregnant.
Emma said to us, ‘I just had the blood test result today and it is positive.’ ‘I will definitely keep in touch with you.’

Achieving excellent egg quality
Gynaecologists and IVF clinics tend to think of egg quality as part of an irreversible ageing process which means that accordingly egg quality will be in decline and cannot be improved.
We take a slightly different view. Although the ageing process does impact on egg quality, the older one gets, the poor is the egg quality, scientific data and our clinical experience demonstrate that egg quality can be improved over a period of time to increase the chances of natural pregnancy, success rate for IVF or egg freezing.
Although AMH is a measure or quantity, not quality, the scientific literature suggests that combined with Antral Follicle scan, it could be a good predictor of egg quality especiailly in a IVF type environment where the collecting f a high number of eggs are paramount. High FSH is often associated with low AMH. Given that we are able to increase AMH and reduce FSH, it is likely that we are also able to improve egg quality. The best way to find out about egg quality is of course when the eggs are collected. Our clinical experience confirms that we can indeed improve egg quality for older women.
Susan came to us when she was 42 with low AMH and high FSH. She had a retest of her FSH after a few months of treatment. Here is what she told us:
‘My FSH result was 25 before. When I receive the test result after a few months of treatment, I was so nervous that I was too frightened to look at first. When I did, I was so pleased. It is now 13.9!’
Subsequently, she went for a cycle of IVF with the Clinic we work with. It was not successful but she told us:
When the eggs were collected, the IVF Clinic was surprised to find that all my eggs are of excellent quality. They say this is very rare in a woman of my age.

Failed IVFs and natural pregnancy
Contrary to popular opinions, the success rate of IVFs are generally lower than the failure rate i.e. Averaging across all age groups, an IVF cycle has a higher chance to fail than to succeed. The failure rate will move dramatically upwards as a woman ages. For example, at the age of 43 – 45, the success rate is lower than 10%, at the age of over 45, the success rate is lower than 5% if one is using one’s own eggs.
Another class of patients we see regularly are women who have failed IVF attempts at the stage of embryo development i.e. the embryos do not develop which is often attributed to poor egg quality or implanting i.e. where the embryos are transferred but they do not take, the reasons are often unclear. We have a good track record of helping women to achieve natural pregnancy after up to 4 failed cycles of IVF, some of which are documented in the national media.
Catherine used herbal medicine for 5 months and she had this to say:
‘I cannot thank TCM Fertiliity Clinic enough for your professional service. Your working with a IVF clinic helped to maximise my chances of getting pregnant. Although the IVF clinic has been extremely helpful, it did not result in a pregnancy. I am now 10 weeks pregnant after using the herbs for a few more months. I am thrilled.’

Many women experience recurring miscarriages and more often than not, the precise reasons are unclear. We do know however that hormonal imbalance is associated with at least some miscarriages. At TCM HealthCare, we have extensive experience in dealing with hormonal imbalance and miscarriages. We regularly deal with women who has 3 or 4 miscarriages to achieve natural pregnancy.
Mrs. Clark had 5 miscarriages prior to her visit to our Clinic. Her husband wrote to us:
‘Apologies for the delay in getting back to you following my last course of herbs in Jan. I am still awaiting the results of the semen analysis but we recently confirmed that my wife is pregnant, 8 weeks’.
We had our first scan today and all appears well so far. She is seeing an acupuncturist experienced in pregnancy and we have a good support network now to help us.
Please do let Dr Li know and pass on our deepest thanks to him and to all of you for your help in this. It is a truly life changing experience and we are deeply grateful for all of your assistance.
Thanks again, should we want assistance at some point again in the future, I will know where to come.’

Endometriosis and infertility
Endometriosis is regarded as pone of the major causes of infertility, affecting up to 50% of women with fertility issues. Conventional technique such as surgery is invasive and the prognosis after surgery as regards fertility does not seem to be vastly improved. Conventional medication often takes the form of conceptive pills which clearly pose problems for women with fertility issues.
At TCM HealthCare, we routinely treat women with endometriosis. We aim to keep the endometriosis under control where pregnancy and live births can take place. We also have expedience in getting rid of it altogether in some cases which result in better quality of life.
‘I have a laboratory report from my doctor to say that endometritis is completely gone. I would like to continue treatment for infertility.’
Mrs. Lombardelli came from Italy to attend TCM Fertility Clinic every month. Mrs Lombardelli had been receiving treatment for about 4 months.

Hormonal Imbalance and irregular periods
Hormonal imbalance often go hand in hand with irregular period. It is a major cause for key conditions that impact on fertility such as PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome).
At TCM HealthCare, we routinely treat women with irregular periods. The treatment mode is mainly in the form of tailor made herbal remedies. Within a few months, most patients (over 80%) find that their periods are becoming more regular.
Many women follow our treatment programme to achieve natural live births while others may prefer to combine using us with IVF.
‘I just had the blood test result today and it is positive.’, ‘Yes, we will definitely keep in touch.’
Emma from London had irregular periods and was treated by conventional contraceptive pills and IVF before she came to us.

Primary Ovarian Failure and Early Menopause
Premature ovarian failure (POF), also known as premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), or primary ovarian insufficiency is the loss of function of the ovaries before age 40. POF is diagnosed when a woman does not have periods, has abnormally high level of FSH and has abnormally low level of Oestrogen. At TCM HealthCare, we have a good track record in treating this condition, the success of which means that FSH is lowered and the natural period cycles come back without the use of drugs to induce cycles.
Betty lost her periods for some months before she came to us at the age of 40. Her doctor suggested that she is approaching menopause (early menopause) and nothing could be done. She saw us for 6 months. Although her periods did not come back during this time and her AMH did not improve, we found her reproductive and general health improved. She stopped treatment after 6 months and she wrote to us half a year later.
‘I am not sure if you remember me but you treated me last year. I just wanted to give you an update on my situation.
Following the very disappointing amh results I had after the 6 cycles (I think) of Chinese herbs, I did not see my period for 6 months…. My period came a month after and following this I used an ovulation kit which gave me a positive reading and we tried to conceive. We were successful and I’m now 24 weeks pregnant with twins!! All is well so far with the pregnancy. I do not know if I was/am approaching menopause as was suggested by doctors or if my earlier miscarriage caused an imbalance. ..
Anyway I just wanted to let you know and say thank you for your support and positivity at what was a very difficult time for me. I wish you both all the best.
Warm wishes’ August 2017

Severe period pain and/or PMS
Although period pain is usually accepted by women as a normal part of menstrual cycle, our clinical experience suggest that period pain, especially severe pain is associated with issues of the reproductive system. What is more, while some of these issues can be detected and diagnosed by conventional medicine, many women are not given answers or solutions and this can go on for many years. PMS refers to a condition that is associated with two broad types of symptoms. First is emotional which can include stress, anxiety, difficulty with sleep, headache, feeling tired, mood swings, increased emotional sensitivity, and changes in interest in sex. Second is physical which could include bloating, lower back pain, abdominal cramps, constipation/diarrhea, swelling or tenderness in the breasts, cyclic ance, and joint or muscle pain, and food cravings. We believe severe period pain and PMS ay impact on fertility. At TCM healthCare, we have helped many women to deal with severe period pain and/or PMS.
Polly came to us in August 2017. She told us the above after one month’s treatment at her second consultation in September 2017.
‘I have been having severe period pain for more than 10 years. I have to take strong pain killers. I sometime still could not go to work. I could not believe the pain is now all gone just after one month of treatment. I feel like I am a different person.’

Patients treated successfully speaking to the media
Some of our patients with a range of conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, failed IVF cycles successfully treated by us have been documented in national media. Please give us a call if you are interested to obtain copies of the articles.
Can the treatment be combined with assisted conception techniques such as IUI, IVF, ICSI and egg freezing?
Very much so.
We have extensive experience in treating women who wish to combine our treatment with IVF or other assisted conception techniques. Some of our female patients explicitly want to do so from the outset. We work with some of the best IVF specialists in the Harley Street area to give the best combined treatment possible to ensure enhanced success rate.
An increasing number of women are now using us to improve their egg quantity and quality prior to egg freezing to ensure the eggs they are freezing are of good quality and reduce the number of cycles that may be required.
What does the treatment programme consist of?
The treatment programme usually consists of herbal remedy prescribed on a monthly basis following a monthly consultation to check progress. For women, it usually consists of around 18 days of a unique combination of herbal remedies taken over three weeks. You will usually advised by us not to take herbal medications during your menstrual period. In some cases, different herbs may be prescribed for use immediately before and after periods.
During the treatment programme, on the days you should be taking your herbal remedy, you will need to do so twice a day. Consultation is usually once a month in order to ensure that the remedy prescribed is tailor-made for you for your particular condition each month.
Acupuncture may sometimes be required. This will be discussed on a case by case basis.
How often do I have to come back for consultations?
Since Chinese medicine treats every person as an individual, the remedy prescribed is tailor-made for you at the time of the consultation. We expect you to show improvement month on month. As your condition improves, your requirements will also change. Consultation once a month is necessary to ensure that the herbs prescribed are appropriate for your particular condition each month.
For acupuncture, you need to come once a week.
How long is the treatment programme?
The treatment programme usually lasts for 6 to 9 months. This is to allow time for the treatment to work. However, we encourage you to have re tests of your hormone after 3 to 4 months. An overwhelming majority of our patients see significant improvements in post treatment test results.
How safe is the treatment?
We only use herbal remedy approved by the UK Government’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency. Taken as prescribed, they are therefore very safe.
Acupuncture is generally also considered to be a safe. Needless to say, our clinician is extremely well qualified and experienced in using herbal medicines and acupuncture.
Is the treatment safe during pregnancy?
As the conditions we treat are to do with fertility, we have taken into account that some patients may become pregnant and still be taking some of our herbal medications before they find out that they are in fact pregnant. The herbal remedies we prescribe are safe to use during pregnancy. The same applies to acupuncture. Indeed, there are some conditions such as morning sickness and nausea for which acupuncture is renowned for its effectiveness.
What happens if I discover I am pregnant during the treatment?
If you discover you are pregnant, you should stop using the herbal remedy prescribed (not because it is not safe but because you may need another combination) and contact our office as soon as possible. The purpose of this is to assess any future potential problems in your pregnancy and how we can help you minimize them.
A consultation will be offered for you to have an antenatal-check up and advice session. If necessary, as is often the case with patients who have had a history of miscarriage, we will prescribe a week or maximum two weeks of herbal treatment during pregnancy. Like the others, these herbal remedy will be safe for use during pregnancy and our clinician will explain clearly why this may be necessary.
You are also advised to come for another consultation 4 to 6 weeks before your baby is due in order for specific additional herbal remedy to be prescribed and taken after you give birth to the baby. This is to tonify your body after a major event i.e. giving birth to a baby, so that your body is replenished and prepared for breast feeding, any future pregnancy and better health.
If you are on the acupuncture programme, you should also call us to make an appointment to assess how our programmes can help ensure your pregnancy progresses smoothly.
